Nick Gearing started working for his fathers company in 1989 managing a small shrub growing nursery. After two years was transferred to the garden maintenance department where he led a maintenance crew for seven years, gaining experience in domestic & commercial garden care, hard landscaping and people management.
During the summer of 1997 he decided to start his own business & purchased a mower & some tools using a credit card. With only one regular customer Nick left secure employment & started visiting sites all over Stevenage & the surrounding areas to try to create a customer base.
In a Ford Fiesta, no overdraft, and much hard work, the business quickly developed a customer base of over 80 clients & was able to support the business for its first and most vulnerable year.
Nick's first van
During the second year Nick purchased a small van & rented a trailer. After just one month the van broke down beyond repair, leaving a thriving new business with no transport or financial resources.
With the bank refusing to help at all, Nick sold personal possessions & used a credit card to raise enough money for a deposit on a new van from Vauxhall.
Over the next eight years NJ Garden Services expanded into many other areas of exterior care & construction employing twelve members of full time staff by the end of 2004. With a winter downsize in Jan 2005 N.J.G.S has been able to tune it's front line staff to seven well trained Staff & management team with our total workforce back to Twelve strong.
In November 2007 we made our long awaited move into commercial premises on the Marymead Business Estate. We stayed there for a few years but eventually outgrew the premises and in 2017 constructed a new office at the Hyatt trading estate in Stevenage Industrial area.
Like all businesses N.J.Garden Services' greatest challenge has been finding the right staff. We believe we have put together a great team of people & have been able to develop competitive pricing along with a quality finish to work. Willing to invest time into customers, helping them solve their exterior challenges our customer base continues to grow daily, providing work twelve months of the year.
